That period of time between the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 was similar to present day America, as the nation was deeply divided. On the one hand were Loyalist, who sided with the British Crown, and the other hand the Patriots, who favored American independence. Throughout the southern United States and Spanish-held Florida, the fighting continued in secret. The British were actively arming the southeastern Indian nations and providing them with important information about movement among American settlers.
The purpose and strategy of the British was to be positively identified and their intentions revealed. Plus, the highest ranking double-agent in American history was identified and revealed to members of the House of Representatives and Senate. Thus, the United States was rescued and American history changed.
John Walter Davis, known as JW was the son of a Revolutionary War hero that was the owner of merchant ship that sailed the eastern seaboard and to England. While JW's father was a Patriot, he was a man of mystery and intrigue. He had friends in both high and low places. JW wanted much to follow in his father's footsteps, and that he did!
JW met Andrew Jackson and became his friend in unusual circumstances. Through his father he came to realize that while perhaps too easy to wrath, Jackson was no less a man of unimpeachable integrity, and equally unmatched courage. JW would prove an equal.
JW became one of the most important Master Spies in the history of the United States. Among his intelligence coups were; Discovery of the circumstances for the death of Meriwether Lewis, the treachery of General James Wilkinson, the conspiracy of Aaron Burr, and the obfuscations of Thomas Jefferson. The most important of his intelligence coups was the information of the actual conspiracy between the British and the Spanish and the actual intentions of the British. Wow! This was a plate-full for a gentile southern gentleman, even if he had a penchant for violence!
Before JW and Andy Jackson can report to Congress, they are wined and dined at the City Tavern Club, the most exquisite and exclusive dining facility in Washington D.C. This facility was opened in 1796 and was the favorite of many presidents. It is still in existence, today. While JW was absolutely enthralled by the City Tavern Club, he was not taken-in by either the attention, or the moment.
